Citrus Bowl: LSU Tigers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Citrus Bowl: LSU Tigers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

From its inception in 1947 through 1982, the Citrus Bowl was known as the Tangerine Bowl. But when the Florida Citrus Growers Association became its sponsor in 1983, the name was switched to the Florida Citrus Bowl. It remained the Citrus Bowl, but with different sponsors through the years until 2003. Capital One began sponsoring the game in 2001, and in 2003 decided to switch the name to the Capital One Bowl.

The name stuck until 2014. Capital One ceased its sponsorship, but Buffalo Wild Wings stepped up in its place. However, after last year’s game, they stepped down, and another sponsor has yet to take its place.

Many bowl games started with the intent to drive tourism, but the organizers of this one (the Elks Lodge #1079 of Orlando) wanted to raise money for charity. To get the first game off the ground, each member chipped in $100.

At first, the game hosted only smaller schools. From 1947-67, it was affiliated with the Ohio Valley Conference and hosted teams like Catawba, Saint Vincent, Stetson and Emory & Henry. Catawba, which is now a division II team playing in the South Atlantic Conference, played in the first two and won, 31-6 over Maryville in ’47 and 7-0 over Marshall the year after.
